1. Inline fans mounted inside the ductwork. Inline fans are more efficient because they don’t lose more heat to the outside air.
2. And wall-mounted fans mounted on the exterior of the building. Wall-mounted fans are easier to install and cost less.

When selecting a commercial exhaust fan, you need to consider the size of the fan, the CFM rating, and the static pressure. The size of the fan is determined by the square footage of the space that needs ventilation.

The CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating measures how much air the fan can move. The static pressure is the pressure that the fan can create to move air through the ductwork.

Inline Exhaust Fans

Inline fans are more efficient than wall-mounted fans because they don’t lose heat to the outside air. However, inline fans are more challenging to install and usually cost more. Inline fans often have low-maintenance bearings, are quieter, and incorporate vibration mitigation technology.

Inline fans should be RoHS-compliant (meaning the amount of hazardous and difficult to dispose of substances is limited), IP44 rated, and are available in a variety of voltage configurations. For industrial use, inline fans are used for colling the building, extracting fumes, and cooling equipment.

Inline exhaust fans are mounted to a joist in the “attic” space. A duct runs from the fan to a vent in the ceiling and another duct runs from the fan to a roof vent. The fan expels the air into the other duct that connects to the vent in the roof, discharging air from the building.

Wall-Mounted Exhaust Fans

Wall-mounted fans are easier to install than inline fans and usually cost less. However, wall-mounted fans are less efficient because they lose heat to the outside air. Also called standard exhaust fans, these fans are mounted just above the ceiling.

An intake vent will be cut into the ceiling below, and an outlet extends to the roof. The fan creates suction that pulls air up through the downward vent. As the air enters the duct, the fan blows it toward the vent in the roof.
